Cobalt collaboration in the DRC
The Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) mining industry may be considered one of the more challenging countries to operate in on the African continent. True or not, one of its largest copper/cobalt producers, Chemaf, has together with its partners – commodity trader Trafigura and NGO PACT – disregarded this sentiment entirely, having successfully formalised artisanal mining activity on its previously dormant Mutoshi mine. In doing so, the company has tapped into a resource which was operationally not feasible, while improving legal transparency and economic livelihoods for thousands of local residents.
