Underpinned by 11 signatory countries with Trafigura as the anchor investor and founding member, the Miombo Restoration Alliance is restoring the Miombo corridor with a USD500 million target investment in carbon removal projects under Article 6.

The Miombo corridor, covering 2.6 million square kilometres, is one of Africa’s largest dryland ecosystems. Its vital resources, services and biodiversity support over 150 million people. The Miombo Restoration Alliance’s bespoke framework is designed to facilitate efficient coordination between policymakers, communities, and project developers to support ecosystem restoration.

The selected project designs rely on restoration of degraded lands with native species, often with secondary project activities to address core causes of degradation, such as agroforestry, conservation, and cookstoves. The project design is informed by government partners, community preferences, and ecological context with Carbon Direct.

“The Miombo Restoration Alliance is investing[…] in the restoration of one of Africa’s most vital ecosystems.”

H.E. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi

President of Mozambique
