Shipping decarbonisation

The shipping sector accounts for over 80 percent of the world’s trade volume and an estimated three percent of all GHG emissions globally.

With 5,000 shipping and chartering voyages a year, we recognise the importance of supporting the decarbonisation of the shipping sector, both with our own fleet and across the industry. Areas of work include:

‎ ‎

  • Maintaining a modern fleet and calling for a global price on carbon for shipping fuels;
  • Advocating for change through industry forums such as the Global Maritime Forum, World Economic Forum’s First Movers Coalition, and through dialogue with member states of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO);
  • Trialling several new fuels, including co‑sponsoring the development of alternative fuels and investing in innovative on-board emission capture technology;
  • Co-sponsoring MAN Energy Solutions’ development of ammonia marine engines;
  • Ordering four Medium Gas Carrier vessels, capable of being powered by and supplying low-carbon ammonia;
  • Investing in wider efficiency measures such as silicone hull coating, wake equalising ducts, ultrasonic propeller antifouling technology and continuous underwater hull cleaning and propeller polishing.

Ammonia-fuelled gas carrier vessels

Trafigura is investing in vessels capable of using and transporting low-carbon ammonia to help decarbonise the shipping industry. We have signed a contract for four Medium Gas Carriers to be delivered in 2028, as we strive to become a leader in the low-emission tanker market and encourage the development of zero-carbon fuel infrastructure.

These vessels, powered by low-carbon ammonia, will significantly reduce emissions compared to traditional marine fuel-burning ships, contributing to the decarbonisation of multiple sectors. This initiative supports Trafigura’s commitment to reducing its shipping fleet’s carbon intensity by 25% by 2030 and aligns with global decarbonisation goals.

Piloting Novel Onboard Emission Monitoring

Trafigura is trialing the PureMetrics™ system, developed by Daphne Technology, on a chartered LNG carrier. This innovative technology measures real-time GHG emissions, replacing inaccurate fuel consumption estimates and ensuring compliance with international regulations.

By integrating various data sources, PureMetrics™ improves operational efficiency and reduces emissions, supporting Trafigura’s efforts to establish a baseline for GHG emissions and drive targeted reduction strategies in its maritime operations. These initiatives demonstrate Trafigura’s dedication to advancing sustainability in shipping and supporting the global transition to zero-carbon maritime operations.
