Published on20 Apr 2020

Geopolitical tensions and the coronavirus shock on global economies are making for volatile tanker markets on a daily basis. But if it persists, the pandemic is also set to fundamentally hit an established inspection standard in the tanker industry that acts as a common denominator for several sectors , companies and governments worldwide. Trafigura global head of wet freight Rasmus Bach Nielsen warned that tanker owners and charterers are still dependent on oil majors and terminals to accept ships with SIRE inspections older than six months when clearing vessels for their intended voyages. “We are part of the chain, but all the parts of the chain need to work together to be able to continuously clear ships,” he told Lloyd’s List.
