Trafigura and Generadora Metropolitana acquire the Los Guindos Power Plant in Chile
Transaction includes the conversion of the Los Guindos power plant from diesel to natural gas, strengthening the security and flexibility of the country's electricity system.
Santiago, 1 July 2026 – Trafigura, a global leader in the commodities industry, and Generadora Metropolitana, one of Chile’s most relevant energy companies, have completed the acquisition of the Los Guindos Power Plant, located in the municipality of Cabrero in the Biobío Region of Chile.
The acquisition brings together Generadora Metropolitana's deep operational expertise in the Chilean electricity market and Trafigura's global energy trading capabilities and extensive supply network.
The plant has an installed capacity of 273 MW across two turbines and currently runs on diesel. As part of the project, the conversion of the units to natural gas will begin this year. This will allow an increase in maximum generation capacity, as well as operation on a lower-emission fuel, enabling a more efficient and flexible operation aligned with the country's energy transition goals.
"Chile is a strategic market for Trafigura in Latin America, and this transaction marks our entry into the country's power sector with a long-term commitment. Generadora Metropolitana will bring its operational expertise in the local market, backed by the logistical and commercial experience Trafigura has built over decades in energy markets around the world," said Gerardo Zmijak, Commercial Director for Trafigura Argentina.
Generadora Metropolitana will assume 100 percent of the operation, administration, and overall management of the Los Guindos plant.
"This acquisition is a concrete step in our growth plan and in the consolidation of a cleaner, more reliable energy mix. Converting the two Los Guindos units to natural gas will allow us to add capacity with lower emissions while providing flexibility, security, and backup to the electricity system — a key contribution to Chile's energy transition," said Diego Hollweck, General Manager of Generadora Metropolitana.
