Trafigura and the Trafigura Foundation donate USD150,000 to support Ebola response in DRC
Contribution to fund the purchase and delivery of medical equipment for the Ituri Province facility
Kinshasa, 28 October 2026 – Trafigura, in partnership with the Trafigura Foundation, today announces a joint donation of USD150,000 (USD75,000 from Trafigura, matched by the Trafigura Foundation) to purchase and deliver essential medical equipment to the Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital in Ituri Province. The delivery includes 80 hospital beds and mattresses, cardiac monitors, patient monitoring devices, IV stands, medical furniture, a power generator, and uniforms for healthcare personnel.
The contribution is intended to support local Ebola response efforts and to strengthen the hospital's capacity to receive and care for patients. The new beds will allow the hospital to renew over 60 percent of its current bed capacity, addressing one of its most pressing needs.
Shari Minerals, a mining company operating in the DRC in partnership with SOKIMO, a state-owned Congolese gold mining company, is supporting with local delivery to the hospital.
The Trafigura Foundation has provided over USD 500,000 in total emergency funding for the Ebola response in the DRC, including a contribution to the pooled Start Fund, managed by the Start Network. The funding has helped the Alliance for International Medical Action (ALIMA) and Action Against Hunger expand treatment and isolation capacity and strengthen frontline health facilities. It has also helped train more than 300 health workers, and community awareness activities have reached over 150,000 people.
Dr Richard Lokudo Lopay, Medical Director of Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital, said: “For many years, we have faced difficult circumstances: severe shortages of medical equipment, ageing buildings and insufficient resources to meet our community’s essential healthcare needs. Against this backdrop, Trafigura and the Trafigura Foundation have made an extraordinarily meaningful contribution through their generous donation of medical equipment. The equipment arrives at a critical moment. With this support, we can strengthen our diagnostic capabilities, improve the quality of care and, above all, save lives.”
“In the face of the health challenges our country is facing, this solidarity demonstrates that by bringing together public bodies, the private sector and philanthropic partners, we can provide concrete and sustainable solutions for the benefit of the population. This aspect is very important to us because, as well as owning strategic mining assets in the provinces of Ituri and Haut-Uele, SOKIMO owns, manages, facilitates and supports essential infrastructure such as hospitals, schools and other community facilities that underpin the daily lives of local people.”, said Mr François Kakese Kimaza, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SOKIMO.
Hervé Otschudi, Executive Director, DRC, at Trafigura, said: “Given the threat posed by Ebola in Ituri Province, we wanted to work with the Trafigura Foundation to provide concrete support to Mongbwalu General Referral Hospital, helping it care for patients in better conditions. This donation underscores our long-standing commitment to the DRC, and we are proud to play a part alongside the Trafigura Foundation in supporting local communities in this challenging time. We thank Shari Minerals and SOKIMO for their support in facilitating the delivery to the hospital.”
Trafigura has been present in the DRC for over 25 years, serving customers across energy, metals and minerals. The company employs more than 80 people in-country and operates logistics infrastructure to support its trading activities, including significant storage capacity for refined metals, concentrates and chemicals required for mining. Trafigura is also a shareholder in the Lobito Atlantic Railway, an open-access rail corridor connecting the DRC’s Copperbelt to the port of Lobito in Angola, providing an efficient route for the export and import of goods.
